The Gems try to teach Mage to control his powers.
[Open. Int. Beach House]
(The Gems warp in, covered in goop.)
Citrine: Ew... it's in my hair!
Ivory: It's in my eyes!
Jet: It's on my- (notices gem) Oh no...
Citrine: What's wrong?
Jet: (pulls down shirt) It's cracked.
Mage: Can I help?
Citrine: No, Mage. Just clean yourself up.
Ivory: Actually, you can.
Jet: Your mother had healing powers.
Citrine: I'm fairly certain you and your mother share the same abilities.
Jet: Yes. Her powers flowed through her tears.
(Mage steps on his own foot, wiping a tear away and rubs it on Jet's gem.)
Jet: That's better.
Citrine: If you want true mastery over your abilities, you'll need some serious mentoring.
Mage: I'm up for the challenge!
Ivory: We can start with the basic stuff.
Jet (singsong voice): Oh, I'll go first!
[Trans. Ext. Hill]
Jet: Pay attention to these petals, Mage. The petal’s dance seems improvised, but it is being calculated in real time based on the physical properties of this planet. With hard work and dedication, you can master the magical properties of your gems and perform your own dance! (summons spear) Like so.
[Trans. Int. Ivory's Room]
Mage: (picks up pile of petals and tosses them in the air) Wah!
Ivory: Did he tell you the petal thing?
Mage: Yeah! I'm supposed to work really hard to dance like a tree! ...I think.
Ivory: Listen, Mage. All that practice is no fun. Whenever I need to summon my weapon, it just happens. (summons whip) See? Didn’t try at all.
[Trans. Ext. Beach]
Mage: So I'm supposed to work really hard and not try at all at the same time?
Citrine: Yes. Or... you could link your mind with the energy of all existing matter. Channeling the collective power of the universe through your gem, which results in— (summons wings) Or at least that’s my way of doin' it.
[Trans. Int. Beach House]
Mage: That's it. I give up.
Jet: Don't be silly, Mage.
Ivory: Yeah, you're fun to have around, even if your gem is useless.
(Jet glares angrily at Ivory.)
Ivory: I... mean, you’re one of us, Mage. We're not the Crystal Gems without you!
Citrine: Indeed. (nods)
Mage: Thanks. But I just wanna be alone... (walks toward room)
Mage: I said leave me alone! (pushes Ivory to the ground)
(Mage's gem glows brightly. He "pulls" a sword from it.)
Mage: (gasps) I get a sword?!
Citrine: Well done.
Jet: Hooray for Mage! (claps)
Ivory: Cool. (walks into room)
Mage: Wow... (swings sword)
Jet: Whoa, Mage. Be careful. You haven't proper experience yet.
Mage: This is so cool! I summon my weapon with-
